Strategy Stress Test
About this focused engagement
A Strategy Stress Test provides an independent challenge of an existing strategy, business model, multi-year plan or major investment decision. It examines whether the underlying choices and assumptions are coherent, economically credible and resilient when competition or the wider environment changes.
The work combines selected analytical tests with management dialogue and, where appropriate, a focused board discussion. The purpose is not another risk register. It is a clearer basis for decisions: what holds, what should change and which options to preserve. Every engagement is personally led by Dr Frank Heyd.
Who will benefit most from this engagement?
Boards, investment committees, owners and CEOs considering a strategy, five-year plan, capital commitment or investment thesis.
It can support an annual strategy review, a consequential decision or a targeted assessment alongside conventional due diligence. The specific questions determine the scope.
Why choose a Strategy Stress Test?
A plan may look plausible when its documents and risks are reviewed separately. Vulnerabilities often sit between the strategy, financial assumptions, competitive dynamics, capital commitments and ability to execute.
We examine those connections, including opportunities that different market developments might create. The outcome is a decision agenda, not a prediction or a generic list of risks.
What will decision-makers gain?
Strategic Coherence
Clarity on the assumptions, trade-offs and inconsistencies behind the current plan.
Competitive challenge
A view of plausible disruptive competitors, market shocks and changing industry economics.
Systemic exposures
Understanding of common drivers, linked risks and effects that may reinforce one another.
Economic breakpoints
Where data permit, the sensitivities and thresholds that change the financial case.
Robust strategic options
Choices that hold across futures, and commitments that should be staged or revised.
Decision triggers
Prioritized actions, signposts and conditions that should prompt a change of course.
How we conduct the stress test
- Define the decision
Agree what needs independent challenge, which outcomes matter and what the board or sponsor must decide. - Review the evidence
Examine relevant strategy, business plan, budget, CapEx, innovation, execution and risk information, supported by selected interviews. - Apply selected stress tests
Challenge competitive assumptions, linked exposures, scenarios, financial drivers and implementation constraints where relevant. - Challenge the findings
Work with management to test interpretations, close material gaps and prepare decision-relevant conclusions. - Support the decision
Discuss conclusions with the sponsor or board, identifying adjustments, options, owners and future triggers.
Focused on the questions that matter
The scope is tailored to the decision and available evidence. A targeted review can be compact; a broader assessment may require several weeks. A board session can be short even when the preceding analysis is substantial.
Let’s discuss which assumptions deserve challenge before the next major commitment.
