Navigating an Automotive Company Through Unforeseen Shocks with Scenario Planning

1. Situation
A major automotive company was already managing semiconductor shortages, uncertain electric-vehicle adoption and a changing regulatory environment when the war in Ukraine introduced a new set of supply-chain, geopolitical and market exposures. Management needed a way to make decisions without treating the central forecast as certainty or reacting separately to every new development.
2. Approach
We helped the client identify the forces through which the war and related disruptions could affect the business. The most consequential uncertainties were selected and combined into a small set of distinct, plausible scenarios rather than an exhaustive catalogue of possible events.
Each scenario described a coherent future and its implications for the company. Specific signposts were defined so management could recognize which conditions were beginning to emerge and distinguish temporary noise from a material shift in the operating environment.
The scenarios were then converted into action. Management developed responses tailored to individual futures as well as no-regret moves that made sense across the full set. This clarified what to act on immediately, what to prepare and what to monitor before committing further resources.
3. Result
The senior management team gained a structured basis for discussing uncertainty and making decisions during a rapidly developing shock. The scenarios, signposts and response options made it easier to realign plans as conditions changed. The exercise replaced reactive debate with a shared view of exposures, robust actions and signals requiring further decisions.
