Strategic Organizational Revitalization of an Aerospace Firm
1. Objectives
An aerospace firm faced challenges in unlocking growth in existing and new growth fields in an increasingly competitive environment. A significant challenge faced was the presence of organizational silos, which prevented the company from capitalizing on market opportunities. Acknowledging this, they embarked on a strategic organizational restructuring to more effectively seize future growth opportunities in their increasingly competitive environment.
2. Approach
The process began with an analysis of the client’s organizational structure, involving structure benchmarking, an in-depth value chain evaluation, governance analysis, and a personnel structure review. We included the client’s team in idea generation, valuing their organizational insights.
Leveraging these insights, we collaborated with the client’s leadership to develop a forward-looking organizational blueprint. This design harmoniously combined strategic imperatives, the operating model, the organizational structure, governance mechanisms, future committees, and executive roles into a unified target organization.
After defining the target organization, we shaped a transformation plan that included a 12-month roadmap, detailed action plans and a personnel transfer concept from today’s structure to the new set-up. We also devised a case for change with a benefit case to build a rationale for the suggested approach.
3. Results
The reorganization removed unhealthy departmental silos with a streamlined management structure, reduced departmental redundancies, and created greater clarity and management focus. In addition, this reorganization catalyzed a change-oriented mindset within the workforce.
In addition, the reorganization strengthened the shareholder control model through a reashaped supervisory approach. A newly created Industry Advisory Board served as a strategic partner in the go-to-market strategy and R&D roadmap.
At the project’s end, we delivered an action plan aimed at securing the shareholder objectives in the client’s 5-year financial planning, a roadmap guiding their future growth. This case study demonstrates the value of strategic restructuring in aligning organizational capabilities with market and shareholder objectives.
